The very first meeting of [[The Cave Wall]]. 14 People attended, and Room 657 was full. ## The Summarised Minutes This weeks topic : [[What does it mean to be educated in a connected world]]? [[Storm]] presented four components of the Cave Wall : Why, What, How, Here. *Why* - referring to everyone's personalised motivation and meaning of this project. *What* - to define an ideal, exciting goal to inform the purpose of these sessions. *How* - the philosophy, strategy and enablers for optimal learning and pedagogy. *Here* - The Cave Wall as a platform and means of engagement, learning and curiosity. [[Ross]] and [[Ben]] explored how education is multi-faceted, synthesising the objective of what and why we learn as a 'paradigm through which we navigate the world' - whether the components be inherently practical or theoretical. [[Quin]] posited that [[The Cave Wall]]'s value will lie beyond the gathering of facts, rather, by discussing relevant applications and combinations of facts, we could engage in higher order learning and let our curiosities of the problems we may face lead us to new insight. [[Jordan]] offered a critique of the word 'educated', suggesting that this concept of learning is rather a life-long endeavour rather than something that 'ends'. [[Sam Wilson]] argues that this continuous learning requires a signpost for it to be meaningful and progress. Responding to [[Sam Wilson]], [[Jordan]] then states that our signposts may differ, and that's alright, because the process of getting there may be similar. Each to their own north star - a concept Sam agreed with. [[Storm]] connected the [[Models of Benjamin Bloom]] to this discussion, bringing higher-order learning and the influence of the means of education into the equation. [[Thomas]] mentioned how his takes on freedom, indoctrination and critical thinking lead to his conceptualisation of education and what it should be. [[Katja]] articulated that a focus of the group should prioritise filling in the gap left between our university education, and what's really valuable to learn about in the real world. [[Makhado]] suggested we take some time to more clearly define the 'why' aspect, to which [[Tiger]] responded that the how and why are linked in a mutually complimentary way. The problem of 'scale' emerged and [[Piet]] addressed the problems of lecture halls and the strengths of a discussion table. [[Louis]] recommended a more focused structure and a 'show-and-tell' for *Obsidian*, the digital component of the cave wall. (The writing, publishing and linking functions of this software will be covered during that session) ## Notes on the Structure of the Cave Wall Towards the end of the session, the question of structure was brought up. The Cave Wall has two elements to it, as of right now : 1. A weekly discussion group 2. An online collection of essays, writing and enquiries. (what you're reading right now) Together, we find a platform that could reflect the collective curiosities and collaborative efforts to investigate ideas. I understand the conflicting pressures of contraction and expansion concerning the numbers. A resolving structure will be proposed soon, to carry this idea out of it's infancy. I'm working on it right now. As time elapses, [[The Cave Wall|the cave wall]] could become something meaningful. The engagement and excitement from the participants is inspiring. The main focus, for now, is to make the next session is the best it can be. Finding and creating value with what we have in front of us will remain the priority. Thank you for your interest.
